Transport cages for any purpose
1. For chatching mice
To catch mice small plastic cages work best, because you can remove the top completely.
2. Short distance transport
If you want to take your pets over short distances from one place to another, e.g. another room or to the vet, there is a wide range of transport cage types, e.g. plastic cages or pet carrier.
They have to meet the following criteria: They should have mostly closed sides to protect from unwelcome drafts, but should still allow proper ventilation. Enclosures made mainly from wire mesh or normal cages are too drafty and cause accidents
When you buy your transport cage, take care that the mesh is small enough that your mice can't put their whole head through the gaps and might get stuck.
Cages with only mesh on the top also have another advantage: Bedding can't fall out of the cage.
3. Long distance transport
Sometimes rodents have to travel longer distances, moving to a new owner or for another reason. Then you should use bigger cages that fulfill the same criteria as cages for short distances do.
Your best option are full plastic cages with wire only in the top, which you can buy in different sizes.
In bigger sizes also huge groups can be carried comfortably and such cages are big enough to prepare them with houses and things to play.
Types of transport cages
Full plastic cage
Full plastic cages consist of a coloured bottom tray and a transparent upper part with bars on the top. Some types also have a removable plastic level. These cages are known as Duna cages in the UK.
You can buy different sizes in a pet store. Take care that the bars are narrow enough for mice.
Theses cages are best for long distance transports. Sizes of 40 to 80 cm are most practical.
Advantage:
- nearly no unwelcome drafts
- Bedding can't fall out
- enough space for bigger groups and longer trips
Disadvantages:
- mice like to gnaw at the hole for the water bottle
- bad ventilation → not suitable for permanent housing
Kritter keepers
Kritter keepers are transparent with a remouvable, coloured top. You can buy them in different sizes.
According to the size of the cage you can use it to catch very shy mice, for a trip to the vet or for longer distances.
Advantages:
- nearly no unwelcome drafts
- bedding can't fall out
- mice seldom gnaw at it
Disadvantages:
- might be too small for bigger rodents or groups
Petcarrier
Petcarrier usually look like a basket and you can take the top half off. The lower half usually is coloured and has no ventilation, the upper one is white and has gaps for ventilation and a transparent top you can open.
Advantages:
- better ventilation because of the gaps on the side
- bedding can't fall out
- you can carry up to four of them once
Disadvantages:
- too small for bigger groups ans rodents
- mice like to gnaw especially at the gaps in the side
