The Fancy Mouse Attic
The enclosure
A big dresser or a wardrode/cupboard that's not too high is best suited for a mouse attic, especially if it's an old piece of furniture, reminding of a dark, old attic. You can create that effect with special paints and varnishes that imitate the look of old wood. Make sure that anything you use is non-toxic.
Bedding
A mouse attic doesn't have any bedding except for old pieces of cloth and newspapers (non-toxic ink!). You can offer your mice a box for digging, filled with bedding and hay. Toilet corners can be filled with cotton bedding, this will look like dust bunnies laying around in the attic. The rest of the surface can be cleaned with a hand broom and a moist dish cloth.
Furniture
Be creative! Anything that you would find in an attic can be used: old crockery and pots, chopping boards, flower pots, buckets, boxes ect. Try garage sales and flea markets if you can't find what you need in your own attic. Make sure you use only natural materials and nothing made from plastic.
All opening in the furniture must be big enough that the mice can get through them without problems, 3 cm in diameter at least. The mice also must be able to climb by themselves out of all furniture you use (big boxes, buckets).
Suitability and care
The fancy mouse attic is best suited for a small group with lots of room. The more animals you keep in your attic, the more care it will need since more mice of course produce more waste and you will need to clean it regularly due to the missing substrate.
