What to to in summer heat?
Depending on the origin of your species you should offer cooling from temperatures of 28 to 30°C. This also applies for species from hot regions!
Watch you pets: Do they get inactive? Do they look flabby? Do they sit on the cool glass pane (if there is one)? These are hints that it is too hot for them.
Now it's high time to offer cooling! Better you do it before such signs occur. Take care that the mice can avoid the cooling if they want to so they can choose where is the proper temperature for them.
To avoid straight sunlight on hot days is self-evident.
There are several strategies to offer cooling. Please keep in mind that not every solution fits to every species or types of cages. The following has approved:
- Put stones, tiles or pottery houses into the fridge and afterwards into the cage
- Soak things made of clay or terracotta with water and put it into the fridge. Some hours later you can put it into the cage. The evaporating water provides additional cooling.
- Put ice and a good portion of salt into a screw-top jar and put it into the cage. The water will stay longer cold because of the salt.
- Take the sand bath into the fridge for some hours and then offer it again. This fits best for sand bathing species.
- Offer a bigger vessel with wet sand or soil. It's brillant cooling especially for voles like bank voles or reed voles.
- Sprinkle your mice with a bit water from the atomizer. But take care: Not every spicies or individual does like this way of cooling! It doesn't fit especially for sand-bathing species like pale gerbils or jerboas.
- Offer a basin wih water. This fits best zu water-bathing species like reed voles for example.
- Wrap a bag with ice cubes or a thermal pack into a towel and lay it on the bars of the cage. The cold air is heavier than the warm and so it will fall into the cage. But take care that your rodents can't reach the bag or pack and gnaw at it!
- Make an old towel wet and hang it on the top or side of cage. Please note: This method doesn't fit to tanks and terraria! And many rodents like to pull the towel trough the bars into the cage.
Be careful if you use ventilators or air conditioning. You have to protect your pets from unwelcome ventilation. Otherwise the can get a cold though it is hot outside!
